How we got here

by RiskIQ founders, Dr. Richard Barber and Jeremy Kidner

1980 → 2000

Fed-up fighting business systems

We have spent decades in leadership roles.

Jeremy held leadership roles in police, risk management in construction and in society-wide government programs.

My roles include commanding a troop of armoured vehicles and lead engineer for a $1bn high-tech project. I was the CEO of a TAFE and the Director of a $500m program of complex projects with international stakeholders.

Along the way, we both found ourselves fighting the business systems that were supposed to enable our work. Factors such as red tape, risk aversion, inappropriate culture and ineffective leaders were common, even in the best organisations.

Those 'internal factors' were the underlying root causes of churn and failures, yet were seldom identified or managed as sources of risk.

We were frustrated by the constant need to 'fight the business system' if we wanted to drive performance, innovation and success.

2000 → 2010

Getting to the root of the problem

After almost 30 years of these kinds of experiences, I decided enough was enough and embarked on a PhD into how and why 'internally generated' sources of risk were so common yet so poorly managed.

For almost a decade, I conducted PhD research and worked as a consultant in industry, government and complex projects across Australia and New Zealand. That work confirmed what Jeremy and I both suspected: Internal weaknesses in business systems are THE most common underlying cause of avoidable churn and failures in complex projects and in organisations.

The primary problem is that risk management practices remain process-based, linear, systematic. They try to deal with one risk at a time, using risk registers and software that do not recognise or deal with the complex, interconnected, emerging, intangible risks leaders experience on a daily basis.

The research demanded the development of new risk concepts, methods and tools based on a systems thinking approach to uncertainty. Most importantly, we got to test all of these in real-world, high-stakes, high-complexity environments.

What survived, were the most practical ways to help leaders deal with complex risks in real time.

2010 → today

Delivering proven solutions

Today, RiskIQ benefits from its decades of experience and research.

It has unique, proven modern risk frameworks and tools leaders to:

  • find, understand and respond to otherwise hidden weaknesses in business systems.

  • find and deal with hidden factors holding intractable problems in place.

  • transform project governance to reduce avoidable churn and failures.

  • Enrich key decisions with greater understanding to risks as a whole and where best to focus effort.

We can work top-down to adapt governance and to enrich strategic decision making. We can work bottom up, educating and training leaders and staff.

Regardless, we are committed to working collaboratively as partners with real leaders to help them and their organisations to thrive. We provide education, training, tools and support in modern, effective governance and risk management practice.

As always, our purpose is to enable leaders and their organisations to succeed in a world of data overload, constant change, churn and uncertainty.
